Methodology

Where Campus Watchlist's data comes from, how it is matched, and its limits.

This page explains, in plain language, how Campus Watchlist collects, matches, and refreshes the player statistics you see. The short version: we gather publicly published stat data, match it to the players on your watchlist, and display it — but the official athletics site for each school is always the authoritative source.

Data sources

Campus Watchlist does not generate its own statistics and does not have scouts or stringers at games. Every number you see on a player page is derived from publicly published athletics data — the same box scores and stat pages that appear on a school's official athletics website and on official statistical feeds for college sports. We collect and reorganize that public data so it is easier to follow across many players and schools.

We do not publish private academic records, medical information, or any data that the school has not already made public. If a school does not publish a stat for a player, we cannot show it.

How players are matched

When you add a player to your watchlist, you identify them by school and jersey number, and we use the player's name as well. Matching the public stat data to your player relies on that combination — school, name, and jersey number. This works well in the vast majority of cases, but it is not perfect:

  • Two players on the same team can share a name or a jersey number across different seasons, which can occasionally cause a mismatch. We use season year to keep these separate.
  • Some schools publish stats under a player's full legal name while you may know them by a nickname or shortened name. If a player's stats are not appearing, the name on the official stat page may differ from the name you entered.
  • Jersey numbers change between seasons and sometimes mid-season. If a player's number changes, the match may break until the new number is reflected in the source data.

Refresh timing

Campus Watchlist is not a live play-by-play feed. Stats are refreshed on a regular schedule after games conclude and after the source athletics site has published a box score. This means there is always some delay between the end of a game and the moment a stat line appears on a player page. That delay is usually a matter of hours but can be longer for games that finish late at night, for games whose box scores are published slowly, or during periods of high traffic across many schools.

If a game has been completed but no stat line has appeared yet, the most common reason is simply that the source box score was not yet available when the last refresh ran. It will typically appear on the next refresh.

Limitations you should know about

  • Not every school is covered. Coverage depends on the school publishing stats in a format that can be collected. Some smaller programs, junior-college teams, or early-season tournaments publish incomplete or inconsistent data.
  • Some stats are not published at all. Advanced metrics that require specialized tracking — such as exit velocity, spin rate, or route data — are generally not available unless the school or an official feed publishes them.
  • Errors in the source are reflected here. If a school's athletics site contains a scoring or data-entry error, that error will appear on Campus Watchlist until the school corrects it upstream.
  • Single-game lines can be noisy. A single box score is one data point. It is not a reliable basis for judging a player. See the stat guides for how to read a season in context.

Season rollover

At the end of a season and the start of the next, rosters turn over: players graduate, transfer, change jersey numbers, and new players arrive. Campus Watchlist treats each season as its own body of data. When a new season begins, prior-season stats do not disappear, but the current-season view resets so that this year's games are not mixed with last year's. If a player changes schools, they are treated as a new entry at the new school for the new season.

During the rollover period — typically the first few weeks of a new season — you may see a short window where a returning player's new-season stats have not yet appeared because the source has not published them or the match has not been re-established for the new year.

Corrections

If you believe a stat on a player page is wrong, the first step is to check the school's official athletics site. If the school's site shows a different number, the school's site is correct and Campus Watchlist is simply out of date or has a matching error. You can report the discrepancy through the Contact page. Please include the player, school, the game date, the stat that looks wrong, and what the school's site shows. We investigate and correct confirmed errors, but we will not override the official source.

If the school's own site shows the same number you see here, then the data is accurate to the source and a correction request should be directed to the school's athletics communications team, not to us.

The authoritative source

To say it one more time, because it matters: the official athletics site for each school is the authoritative source for that school's stats. Campus Watchlist is a convenience layer on top of those public sources. It is a tool for organizing and following the data, not a substitute for it. Whenever there is a conflict, trust the school.
